Lick Run Greenway is a paved trail with a 4.1 mile section from downtown to Valley View mall and a 0.5 mile section at Countryside Park. The greenway provides an excellent commuter route between the city’s biggest commercial areas and offers a lovely respite for a nature walk or run. Connections along the way include Hotel Roanoke, the Visitor’s Bureau, O. Winston Link museum, the Civic Center, Washington Park, Brown-Robertson Park, Huff Lane Park, and Valley View mall. Unique features include the wonderful view of Mill Mountain Star from Washington Park and the greenway bridge across I-581, with excellent traffic watching and views of the surrounding mountains. The creek and many large woodland trees provide habitat, where 94 species of birds have been documented. Farther west along Ferncliff Avenue, there are wide sidewalks, providing an on-road connection from Hershberger Road to the off-road section at Countyside. In addition to the greenway, Countryside Park has fitness stations along a walking trail.
The City is working with potential developers to provide a connection of these two segments of greenway and has also obtained funding to provide bicycle/pedestrian facilities beyond Valley View mall to the airport.
